Cover Design Mistakes I Made — Avoid Them With These Tips
You might not judge a book by its cover. Can you be sure that your readers won’t?
Before you point out that a professionally designed book cover is essential, let me tell you right off the bat that I agree. There are plenty of people blogging about why you need a pro, and I don’t think I’ll be adding anything unique to that argument. I’m writing this article because I’ve seen that a lot of authors are still determined to make their own covers, for various reasons (I won’t go into what those reasons might be — that’s a different blog post altogether), and with a little more know-how, some of them could package their books a lot better.
DIY covers might not work as well as one produced by a professional cover artist, but you can make them work to a certain extent by avoiding certain design mistakes.
I was making these mistakes (and you’ll see the atrocities I’ve had in the past), so I’m not judging anyone . I just want to help. Of course, I’m not encouraging everyone to make their own covers.
But if you have to make your own cover, you don’t have to make it ugly. Like I did.
